Cheap clinic or transparent quote: what should you compare?

Quick answer

A lower quote is not a better or worse offer until you know what each covers. Ask the cheaper clinic to itemise: the same visits, materials named by type and make, anaesthesia, medicines, imaging, follow-up and exclusions as the other. If it does, you can compare the figures like for like. If it will not, you have learned how it answers the question that matters most when something changes. Compare what each price covers and who is named, then compare the prices.

You have two quotes for what looks like the same treatment. One is lower, with a short message and a total. The other costs more and lists every line. It is tempting to read the second as padding and the first as a bargain, or the reverse. Neither reading is justified until the two cover the same things.

What can a lower quote mean?

A gap in price is a question, and these are the usual ways it gets answered. None is a verdict on the clinic.

  • Fewer things are included. Anaesthesia, medicines, imaging, hotel nights or transfers may sit outside the total.
  • A different material or device. The same word in the plan can cover different types and makes.
  • A different plan. Fewer visits, fewer teeth or sites treated, or a different technique can look like the same treatment from a message.
  • Less follow-up. Control visits, remedial work and a named aftercare contact may not be in the price.
  • Different terms. A shorter guarantee, tighter conditions or no stated cancellation terms.
  • A clinic that works at lower cost. This happens too, and it is the one you can only confirm by ruling out the others.

What makes a quote transparent?

Not length, and not friendliness. A transparent quote lets you see what you are buying without asking, and it can be compared line by line with another. What a treatment quote should include goes through the lines; the test is quick: for each of the points above, does the quote say?

A transparent quote also names the clinician, states the exclusions and says what happens if the plan changes after examination. Even with all of that, it only describes an offer. It tells you nothing about whether the clinic's authorisation, clinician or aftercare stand up, and those still need the same checks as any other clinic. Search the facility in the register search either way.

What should you ask the cheaper clinic?

Send the same message to both, and ask the cheaper one to answer in the same lines as the other.

  1. Please itemise the quote in the lines of the attached quote, with the number of visits and nights.
  2. Please name the materials or devices by type and make.
  3. Which items are not included?
  4. What could change the figure after an examination, and how would it be set?
  5. What follow-up and aftercare are included, and who is the named contact?
  6. What are the deposit and cancellation terms, as a document?

What to check in a clinic quote has the full order of work, and how to compare three clinics the method for setting several side by side.

How do you read the answers?

If the cheaper clinic itemises, you can now compare like for like. Put the answers next to the other quote and note where they differ. Sometimes the gap closes; sometimes it is explained by one item, such as a longer stay or a different material, and you decide whether you want that item.

If it will not itemise, or says details are settled on arrival, the figure is a price for an unspecified plan. That is information, but not a verdict on the treatment. Note it, and consider what you would owe if the price moved after you arrived. Beware of a deadline that arrives before the itemised answer does.

If the dearer clinic itemises everything and the cheaper one does not, do not conclude that the dearer one is right. Check its identity, clinician and aftercare. A clear price list is not the same as a clear record.

What if the quotes are not on the same plan?

Then they are not two prices for one treatment. Different diagnoses or different plans can come from different records, or from two clinicians reading the same records differently. Ask each clinic to explain its plan in the other's terms, send both the same records, and treat a second opinion from a clinician at home as a normal part of the process. Do not try to repair the gap with a discount negotiation.

Two quotes and one decision?

An investigation checks the official registration, the provider details and the claims the clinic has made, including the operator and the doctors it names, against the register and the documents.

Where does aftercare come into the comparison?

Last, and often decisive. A price that leaves out follow-up leaves it to you, at home, to find and pay for it. Who is responsible for aftercare and guarantees and travel insurance for dental work explain what to ask for in writing. When you are close to paying, the final checklist before a deposit is the last pass.

Copyable checklist

  1. Same request: both clinics received the same records and the same questions
  2. Same lines: both quotes itemised in the same lines, visits and nights counted
  3. Materials: named by type and make in both
  4. Exclusions: listed in both
  5. Plan changes: what could change the figure after examination, in writing
  6. Clinician: a named person in both
  7. Aftercare: a named contact, follow-up included, who pays remedial work
  8. Terms: deposit and cancellation terms as a document, from both
  9. Identity: authorisation number and operating company checked for both
  10. Price: compared only after items 2 to 8 match

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheaper clinic more likely to cut corners?

You cannot tell from the figure. A lower price can mean fewer visits, a different material, no included follow-up or a shorter guarantee, or a clinic that does the same work at lower cost. The way to find out is to ask the clinic to itemise, not to guess.

Is a transparent quote a sign that the clinic is better?

It is a sign that the clinic can show you what it is selling. That is useful, and it is not a verdict on the treatment. Check the same identity, clinician and aftercare points for it as for any other clinic.

What if the cheaper clinic says the details are decided on arrival?

Then the price is for an unspecified plan and may change. Ask in writing what could change the figure, by how it would be set, and what you would owe if you chose not to continue.

Should I tell each clinic about the other's quote?

You can. Sending each the same request and records is enough; if you mention the other quote, ask the clinic to say which lines differ rather than to match a total.

How many quotes are enough?

Two or three are enough if they are made from the same records and the same questions. More quotes mostly add noise.
